How to Remove Efflorescence
What is Efflorescence?
To put it simply, Efflorescence is a natural phenomenon where salt deposits form on the surface of concrete, bricks, or stone. This occurs when water carrying dissolved salts moves through the material and reaches the surface. As the water evaporates, it leaves the salts behind, creating a white powdery or crystalline residue.
Efflorescence is common in areas with high humidity or where water can penetrate into building materials.
Types of Efflorescence
- Primary Efflorescence: This is when efflorescence occurs prior to installation.
- Secondary Efflorescence: This is when efflorescence occurs after installation. Damp soil conditions generally cause efflorescence on site.
Can Efflorescence be removed?
Generally, efflorescence is harmless and temporary in nature, but it causes aesthetic issues by leaving white stains on the surface, which is very difficult to remove. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to put a timeline to the natural disappearance of efflorescence. Sometimes it will only be prevalent for a few weeks and in certain instances, it might take years to disappear. Therefore, many property owners choose to use an efflorescence remover rather than waiting for it to disappear naturally. Although it is difficult to remove efflorescence, there are specialist cleaners formulated specifically to clean efflorescence from various building materials.
How to Prevent Efflorescence
- Ensure proper drainage around the structure can minimise water infiltration, a primary cause of efflorescence.
- Using waterproofing sealants on the surfaces can also create a barrier against moisture. This may also prevent efflorescence from recurring by reducing the amount of water that is absorbed by and exposed to the surface. To read more about how to choose the right sealant, click here.
